Fifth part of the story leading to the Corellian Corvette Event at Gamex

The lights came down and the holoprojector cast its faint blue glow.  General Dodonna’s distinguished face set to high contrast by the three dimensional display of a fast courier ship rotating in the center of the auditorium.  His familiar voice echoed, out through the viewing room without need of electronic amplification. “Gentlemen this is the Imperial CR90 Corvette Pontiff.  She is travelling from Corellia to Scree Fron and amongst her compliment of crew and passengers are the new Imperial Governor of Scree Fron, his political attaches, advisors and aides.”

“The objective of this mission is to bring down the vessels shields using Proton Torpedoes, disable its engines and land an assault craft somewhere along her hull.”  The image switched to an interior view and deck plans for the standard CR90 corvette.

“From there, commandos will board the Pontiff, secure the governor and as much intelligence and materials as possible then promptly return to base.”

General Dadonna paused for moment as the image on the holoprojector shifted once more showing a broad area of space with the small capital ship in the center of the screen.

“Intelligence indicates that the Pontiff will be travelling with an escort of four Tie/x1 Advanced starfighters. The CR90 itself is armed with two dorsal mounted dual turbolaser turrets and four more port and starboard firing turbolasers. Turbolasers, being generally ineffective against small craft are of little concern, but its fighter escort is.”

The holoprojector image spins to display a two dimensional grid with the CR90 in the center. Four small triangles appear pointing towards the corvette and four small x’s surround the small capital ship’s image.

“The fighter assault will consist of four waves of fighter craft from the 42nd Tactical Squadron.  The first wave of fighters will be led by Beta Flight commander Zebulon Akarimas. Major?”  The General gestured towards Zeb who now took center stage in the briefing.

Zeb cleared his throat and continued.  He hated public speaking. “Beta Flight will be manning RZ-1 A-Wing interceptors armed with Concussion Missiles to take out the Pontiff’s escort fighters as quickly as possible.  Intelligence and common logic indicate that some form of escort will be dispatched to meet with the Pontiff upon her arrival.  It is our intention to draw the TIE/x1’s away from the Pontiff as quickly as possible, opening the door for our heavier ships to engage and disable the Pontiff with little to no resistance.  Beta Flights orders are to engage and draw out the starfighters and either destroy or entangle them long enough for the T-65’s and BTL Y-Wing fighters to deploy their Proton Torpedoes.”

A new set of triangles appear on the screen indicating the position of four T-65’s.  A large green arrow also appears in an area opposite the triangles indicating the possible flight path of ships moving in from Scree Fron.

“The second wave will consist of Alpha Flight aboard T-65 X-Wing fighters.  Alpha Flights orders are to engage the Corvette with their Proton Torpedoes and then provide mop up for Beta Flight or cover on the off chance that reinforcements arrive from on planet.”

“The third wave will be our hammer.  Gamma Flight lead by Maj. Mako will arrive in BTL Y-Wing bombers armed with Proton Torpedoes and ion cannons.  Their orders are to engage the Pontiff and disable her at all costs.  If all goes well, most of the opposition will be in the form of the Pontiff’s turbolaser batteries, but as we all know, never expect the best possible scenario.”

The image of an assault shuttle then appears on the screen and moves towards the corvette.

“Once the Pontiff is disabled, the assault shuttle will be signaled to enter the engagement zone and begin its run on the corvette.  What remains of the 42nd will provide cover for the shuttle until it has completed its mission.”

“Thanks to intelligence retained by Maj. Mako on Corellia, we know that Skree Fron is being used to train new pilots for the remnants of the Imperial Navy.  The Empire is spread fairly thin at this point and we expect that any support from on planet will mostly be in the form of fairly green pilots aboard standard TIE starfighters, but we know for a fact that a flight of TIE/IN interceptors may be available since members of Alpha Squadron arrived for maintenance and refit a few weeks ago.”

Zeb breathes a sigh of relief now that the briefing is almost over and sais. “Questions?”

Zane raises his hand as Zeb nods for him to continue. “Sir, what do we know about fleet disposition in that sector?  Are there Star Destroyers in the area that can support the courier ship?”

“Good question Lieutenant.”, replied Zeb. “In fact recon elements have confirmed that the Star Destroyer Invictus is en route to the system, but will arrive a full 8 standard hours after the arrival of the Pontiff.  Which means we have to make this quick and decisive folks, there is not time to tarry.  We need to be long gone after that Destroyer enters the system or we are toast.  Any more questions?”

This time Van raises his hand and says. “Sir, what is the likelihood that the escort from on planet will already be there at the jump point?”

Zeb nodded and continued, “That is a possibility Lieutenant, but I will have to make that assessment once me and the Buccaneers jump in.  We have channels open to have Alpha come in at any instant if we need them.”

“The simple fact of the matter is that the Colonel and I know how the Imperials plan.  If the TIE’s were coming in from a Star Destroyer or orbital base, it is likely that they would be there waiting, but since they are from on planet which takes more fuel and time than a pure space launch they will wait for the Pontiff to move in a little closer before they fly up to meet it.”

“Anything else?”  The room fell silent. “We launch in two hours men.  Dismissed!”

The unit started shuffling out of the room discussing matters amongst themselves.  The murmur of voices began to die down until only Zeb and Kyan remained.

Zeb put both hands on the control panel, bowed his head down low and let out a long sigh. “I would rather have a straight up fight than this kidnapping scenario.  Blow them up and run away.  That’s what we do best.”

Kyan gave him a look of surprise and understanding then nodded.  “That’s reasonable, but the intelligence this man can divulge about Imperial Fleet displacement in the Outer Rim could greatly increase our chanced to bringing this civil war to an end quickly.  If that’s not worth the risk, what is?”

“I guess we'll find out some day Colonel. I have to go prep.”  Zeb stood up straight to attention and saluted.  Kyan returned the salute and far less disciplined manner.

“Cheer up.  The worst that could happen is we all die.”, said Kyan.

Zeb will never understand how that man can make the most depressing statement sound as comforting as a mother's hug.

Fourth part of the story leading to the Corellian Corvette Event at Gamex

Pre-flight checks were always so redundant.  The 42nd’s Gamma Flight Leader and ACE, Major Jayan “Spanner” Mako hastily checked his fuel levels and ordinance while the remainder of his squadron did the same.  However, it just wasn't the same.  While this ship had all the markings to remind him of his three tours of duties, including the exodus from Hoth to the Battle of Endor, running in a Y-Wing was the last thing he’d imagined.

He'd always been an X-Wing jock.  Had a small stint with A-Wings during Endor… but a Y-Wing?! They could have at least given him something more modern, he thought.  Why not a B-Wing?  R5-J1, his astromech droid, gave a soulful chime trying to let his pilot know that everything was in order.

Shaking his head, “Hey… you said that last time when we were jumped by the Hutts after our hit on Nar Shadda.”  R5-J1 whistled defensively. Jayan chuckled, “I know… I know… it wasn’t your fault.  The techs found that the central core computer was tampered with and that the spaceport droids were at fault for deactivating the Hyperdrive.”

Jayan sighed.  While cliché, he never thought he would admit it.  That little droid had saved his life more than a numerous times and has gotten him out of tight situations, especially with the law.  On Corellia, the Hutts had started to make political and underground advances knowing that the Imperial grasp had started to loosen.

Jayan was on an intelligence gathering mission as a member of CorSec (Corellian Security), courtesy of Rogue Squadron’s Lt. Corran Horn, when he was jumped by a small group of smugglers and was framed for their deaths by Imperial Security.  As Imperial Intelligence was still active at Nar Shadda, he had ditch his cover and regroup with the Alliance to report the Hutt connection.

As he fled, his CorSec X-Wing was intercepted by two Imperial Star Destroyers and almost destroyed.  With his shields nearly gone from concentrated fire from Tie Fighters, he made preparations to jump to hyperspace when his hyperdrive failed.  If it weren’t for R5-J1, he’d be sitting in an Imperial Intelligence detention center on Coruscant or possibly dead.

“Hey J1, hand me that hydrospanner would you?  Looks like I have a gunked up fuel assembly.”  Jayan spat in disgust.  These Y-Wings were truly “Hogs.”  While they were top of the line and some of the best fighters during the Clone Wars, it had nothing on his X-Wing.

“Major?”  A familiar voice permeated the busy sounds of the flight deck.  Jayan looked up and saw his unit XO leaning on his astromech droid.  R5-J1 hooted with disgust. “Jayan I see you haven’t gotten rid of this bucket of rusty nails,” Zeb retorted while rapping the domed droid on the head.

“Did we get the green light from General Dodonna?” Jayan inquired while wiping his hands on his coveralls and throwing the spanner back in the toolbox. Major Akarimas smiled.  “Yeah… both Ackbar and Dodonna green lit our op.  You know this would have gone to Rogue, but you brought back enough intel from Corellia to convince the brass to give it to us.  Let’s not disappoint them.  I think Tycho was disappointed, he really wanted this op.  He may have a past with the governor that we’re about to bag.”

The both of them laughed because they knew that Tycho Celchu was a man of no emotions.  Hence making him the best selection for XO of Rogue Squadron.  Both Zeb and Jayan posted for the position however, even with their multiple tours with the Alliance, the brass had wanted them on the frontline as they were more valuable there rather than campaigning for other worlds to join their cause against the remnants of the Empire.

“So they think capturing this governor is going to give us an edge on curbing the Imperial threat?”  Jayan threw Zeb a hesitant look.  “I mean come on… they have me flying this pig slop here,” pointing to the dripping seals on the leaking fuel assembly of the aging warbird.

Zeb leaned over and took a look.  While the Y-Wings were not the most visually appealing starfighter in the fleet, he did have a certain respect for them.  “Jayan… look you are the best pilot we have.  If we were going in for a furball then I’d give you choice of the litter, but this time the prize is the corvette.  Capt. Qieles has been able to confirm the intel on its flight plan.  You got the stick and a steady hand that will bring down its shields so we can get our troops to board and secure its crew.  If we didn’t have a possible Star Destroyer breathing down our necks, you know you’d be in the mix.  This one is simple, we’ll keep them off of you.  We get in and get out with our prize.  Rogue Squadron has nothing on us.”

Reluctantly Jayan shook his head and began working on clearing the fuel leads.  “So when do we go?”  Zeb pulled back, and lightly kicked R5-J1 in the rear panel as it moved to hand Jayan some cleaning solvents.  The astromech squealed in defiance. “Briefing is at 2100 hours, get your flight ready.”

Third part of the story leading to the Corellian Corvette Event at Gamex

The halls of the Home One, a Mon Calamari Starcruiser, were very different from those of an Imperial Star Destroyer.  While its Imperial counterpart had sterile clean lines of polished durasteel, the MC80 design was very organic.  Curved and suffused in warm lighting with bulkheads of glistening white, it didn’t have the same feel of a purely military vessel.  If it weren’t for the constant hustle and bustle of uniforms and battle gear, one would think that this was just a research and exploration ship, which in essence it was. The Rebel Alliance had a reputation for being a rag tag group of terrorists and civilians playing soldier, but if they were to see how Admiral Gial Ackbar lead and trained his men, they would think twice before slinging their insults, especially after the Battle of Endor.

Zebulon “Zeb” Akarimas rounded the corner of the main corridor leading to the ships large briefing room and nearly ran into his commanding officer.  “Oh, hey there Colonel, I have been looking for you.  I wanted to hand you our equipment roster for the upcoming mission.  It looks like we are packing half the Proton Torpedoes in the fleet.”  Lt. Col. Ichijyo took the data pad with a calm warm smile that was as casual as your favorite sweatshirt. “Impressive, the Alliance does not skimp on equipment.”, said the veteran commander of the 42nd.

“Well, I don’t think they can afford to skimp sir.  Since we’ve been with the Alliance we have been up against three to one odds.  If it weren’t for the fact that we are more skilled, motivated and well equipped than the Imps, this Rebellion of theirs would have ground to a halt a long time ago.”  Akarimas said in his well-practiced fatalistic tone.

Both men started walking together towards the center of the ship. “You really need to stop referring to it as ‘their’ Rebellion Zeb.  We signed up with the Alliance, it’s our Rebellion.  You need to stop thinking of yourself as a mercenary or even worse an Imperial”, said the Colonel as he gently patted the young man on the shoulder.  “I know that you like to stay detached, but we are past that now. We either succeed or fail along with this endeavor.  I don’t think that the Empire will cut us any slack because we once wore an Imperial uniform.”

Zeb’s shoulders sank in acceptance of that truth. He always liked to think that he can take or leave this whole war, pretending that he could always go back to jockeying Ixiyen strike craft on the outer rim for fun and profit. Now he is an officer in the Rebel Alliance and marked for immediate execution by the largest fleet to ply the stars since the old intergalactic wars of the Sith Empire.

“Yeah, I know sir. I’m just not used to fighting with idealists.  It’s much harder to fight for faith than for money.  The latter is far less tangible and less likely to bail you out of a god forsaken gulag. There is little difference between hero and criminal here.” Zeb said dourly.

The Colonel stepped in front of the worrisome pilot and stopped him dead in his tracks. “It all depends on who interprets history Zeb. Let’s leave that for future generations. As for me, I would rather make history, here and now, instead of discussing it after other men had the courage to make a difference. Win or lose. Men like us weren’t meant to get old.”

Zeb nodded and smiled.  “It’s close to time for the briefing sir. We don’t want to keep General Dodonna waiting. It looks like we have an Imperial Governor to bag.”

Second part of the story leading to the Corellian Corvette Event at Gamex

The general’s time was important. Too many forms to sign, too many approvals to give, and too many administrative assistants always getting in the way. The CO and XO of the Raiders walked in to General Dodonna’s office confidently, saluted and stood at attention until they were addressed.

The general nodded and directed them to the seats in front of his desk. “At ease gentlemen. Break down the information for me.” Kyan and Zeb sat down and pushed a series of data pads over. The older and more battle worn gentleman from Commenor, looked curiously at the information provided on the data pads.

“Sir, the Raiders really appreciate you taking your time to take a look at our action plan. As you can see, my XO had the opportunity to touch base with Rogue’s CO and Admiral Ackbar to greenlight our operation. They suggested that we speak with you and that you may have some valuable insight.”

Kyan looked over at Zeb and nodded. The young Major chimed in. “Sir, we understand that you have expertise in siege and capture tactics which may come in handy.” The General fanned out the data pads on his desk, his dark brown eyes starting at the analytical data carefully.

Soft but carefully placed, “Intel has it that Governor Harn, a former resident of Corellia, has been acting paranoid after ABE (After the Battle of Endor) and his move is a direct correlation with his new orders.”

Zeb straightened out his uniform. “General that is correct. The Empire is consolidating their forces around key strategic areas and resources, mainly bacta. Knowing that the people of Corellia are starting to lean towards the Alliance, Governor Harn saw the inevitable change and made a preemptive move back towards Coruscant and what remains of Imperial Intelligence.”

General Dodonna smiled and stroked his aging beard. “Have you anticipated other Imperial movement in the sector? It’s hard to believe that the good governor would be jumping in just with small number of escorts. I expect at least an honor guard of at least 3 or 4 Advanced Tie Fighters coming in with his personal transport and a full squadron of tie fighters from the surface. Also… with his sudden move from Correlia, he’ll most likely have Imperial Star Destroyer bringing up the rear. Gentleman, you only have a short time to get in and out before you get swarmed and overrun.”

Kyan leaned forward in his chair, “Sir, we've anticipated that we only have a short window to capture the corvette. We'll be using a mixed complement of X-Wing, A-Wing and Y-Wing fighters with proton torpedoes. We've requested for B-Wings but they were on assignment in the fight to push towards Coruscant. We're ready General.”

General Dodonna stood up from his desk. “Gather your men Colonel. We'll start mission briefings at 2100 hours.”

Pilot Cards for Ichiban's Raiders

We found a really neat little app for X-Wing players that want to make up some house rules or just have a little fun.  The website by Jason Fuller allows you to make custom Starfighter cards.  Its super easy to use and generates a nice little image of the card for you to print out.  I experimented with this site and came up with some personalized cards for members of the 42nd.  Check em out.

The story of the 42nd Tactical Wing, Ichiban's Raiders

42nd Tactical Wing, Ichiban’s Raiders

The Raiders are a squadron of 12 pilots that formed soon after the transformation of the Galactic Republic into the Galactic Empire under Emperor Palpatine. Many of those in the squadron were in fact formerly members of the Grand Army of the Republic right before its transformation into the Imperial Army or right after the Sector Governance Decree was passed by the then Supreme Chancellor Palpatine.

The squadron started off as a group disaffected former Imperial officers who were disillusioned with shift in principals of their former government. Lieutenant Colonel Kyan Ichijyo, a former high ranking Imperial officer, his first officer Major Zebulon Akarimas, Lieutenant Zane Forest and Captain Baz Qieles resigned their commission after the bombardment and subsequent obliteration of all life on the peaceful planet of Caamas.

Moff Yates Fol aboard the Majestic did not take kindly to their resignation and protestation of a direct order from the Emperor. He had the dissenting officers arrested for treason. Immediately after their incarceration they were set for execution by firing squad.

Hon Paiv, one of the Bothan agents responsible for sabotaging the Caamasi planetary shields was immediately struck by the realization of what he had done to the Caamasi people. Lied to by the Empire and made to take part in what was effectively genocide, he hatched a plan to exact revenge on his former masters. Paiv single handedly orchestrated the escape of the imprisoned pilots and managed to smuggle them off the Majestic. Not without leaving Moff Fol a little present near the star destroyers solar ionization reactor which destroyed the flagship, covering their escape.

Living as Imperial citizens in exile, the four men and Bothan managed to gather a substantial war chest from Kyan’s family who were recently ordered to nationalize their starship production facility on Corellia. From there, they gathered together whatever material they could and fled to the outer rim and Hutt Space.

While in exile, they managed to fight their own guerilla war against the Empire using whatever means were at their disposal. Picking up pilots who, for various reasons had a grudge with the Empire the group grew to full squadron size quickly. They formally proclaimed themselves “Ichiban’s Raiders” after Lt. Col. Kyan “Ichiban” Ichiyo. Kyan picked up the nickname after the squadron helped a Nemodian trader retrieve a valuable load of foodstuffs which was confiscated by the Empire. Ichiban being the Nemodian word for “the highest in quality” the greatful merchant kept insisting that Kyan was “Ichiban!” for recovering his cargo and the squadron liked the sound of it. Not that Kyan ever agreed.

Flying everything from modified freighters, shuttles, Sienar Skipray Blastboats, Incom Z-95 Headhunters, TransGalMeg Ixiyen/ Rihkxyrk fighters and Sienar Tie series fighters, the pilots of the Raiders are rated to be some of the most versatile men in the galaxy when it comes to flight experience.

The group found notoriety and distinction not only as a starfighter squadron, but for several commando style operations they carried out during the first years of their organization. New members trained others in guerilla style tactics, demolitions, hand to hand combat and a variety of weapons. Often resorting to sabotage, infiltration and espionage, the group earned the ire of Imperial Governors and Moffs all over the Outer Rim region, giving them the nickname “Scourge of the Outer Rim” amongst Imperial intelligence. In fact, each member of the squadron has a price on their heads, which also attracts the attention of the galaxies Bounty Hunter organizations.

Soon after the battle of Yavin, the squadron formally joined the Rebel Alliance. The squadron was never fully trusted by their Alliance superiors because of its members individual past affiliations. Many times over, the 42nd Tactical Wing was given “suicide” missions that were deemed too dangerous for truly loyal members of the Alliance. Time and time again the Raiders would be able to pull off the improbable.

Assault on the Pontiff - The story behind the Corellian Corvette event.

As part of our Corellian Corvette event I have developed a story leading up to the combat.  All the members of the Plus Ten to Awesome crew got together and decided we would form an X-Wing Squadron called "The 42nd Strategic Combat Squadron, Ichiban's Raiders - The Scourge of the Outer Rim." Since we put that together in good fun I thought it would be even more fun to involve all of our alter egos in the story of the Assault on the Pontiff!

This is the first part of our tale as we begin to discover why the CR90 Corellian Corvette named Pontiff is important to the Imperium and the Alliance.

I.T.C.C. or Intelligence Tactical Command & Control was really just a large room filled with holoprojectors, computer consoles and analysis droids.  Row upon row of analysts of various species crunched through intel reports, encryption codes and intercepted comms chatter.  In the center was a large holoterminal displaying the core systems and some of the outer rim on a rotating 3D map.  The map was alive with blinking lights of blue red and gold highlighting systems and estimated fleet assets for both the Empire and the Alliance.
Zeb walked in with datapad in hand looking through the lines of cubicles for the telltale cropped dark hair of the squadrons own Baz “Assassin” Qieles.  Baz had been hard at work on something. The Captain had mentioned something during the morning’s squadron briefing about an intercepted comm from an Imperial Corvette near Corellia but would not say much more than that.  Zeb knew that if it were anything at all, Assassin would be on target here.
“Baz, what have you got?” Zeb simply leaned against the cubicle wall casually with a warm cup of caff in his hand staring at the back of Baz’s head as it eclipsed the glowing terminal in front of him.
“Major, if I have anything to report, I promise you will be the first person to know.  The only thing I have now is a hunch and I haven’t built my reputation on anything that flimsy. This could be a big opportunity, but I have to be sure.” Baz did not like being interrupted while he was concentrating.  He was an especially focused individual and he did not take well to being sidetracked.

“I know you don’t like being interrupted Captain, but when one of my men acts uncharacteristically I tend to take concern.  Earlier at the morning briefing I sensed a red flag from you.”  Maj. Akarimas prided himself on the fact that even though he isn’t the best pilot in the squadron, he was especially good at interpreting the men’s moods and dispositions.
“Uncharacteristically?  How so?”  Baz’s second most important character trait was curiosity.  It was the reason why Akarimas decided to take this tac with the conversation.  The secret to talking to Assassin was to have him start asking questions and then get your answers after.
“You mentioned you were working on following up on some intel one of our probe droids picked up.  That’s not like you.  You never mention anything unless it’s already worked it through in that droid brain of yours. If you just mention it in conversation… well let’s just say that’s the closest you ever come to giddy excitement. Which means it could be big.”  Akarimas was smiling like a Nexu as Baz turned around, unamused. Zeb knew the man didn’t like it when someone crawled up in his head like that.  Anticipating the rancor, Zeb tossed the man a Barq Protien Bar, they were Baz’s favorite and it was Zeb’s guess that the young Lt. hadn’t bothered to eat all day. Baz took the peace offering with a grunt and decided not to kill the Major…. today.
“So, what’s up?” Zeb’s mood went right to business.
“The droid picked up a garbled message from Imp fleet HQ asking for an armed escort of hyperspace capable Ties from the Star Destroyer Invictus.  I managed to trace down the origin of the comms and am trying to correlate it with any other intel we have on the area.  It’s a big puzzle of manifests, partial transfer orders and ship movements, but I think I am closing in on something.”  Baz’s hands moved swiftly over the keys of his terminal bringing up several snippets of data.  Each with a red line running through from one to the other, it literally was a puzzle.  The Captain marveled at Baz’s intellect some times.  Everything was a puzzle to be solved, from finding the exact distance that two X-Wings needed to be to concentrate fire on a single target to finding odd patterns in the way the mess hall changes menu items.

“What’s this?” asked the Captain pointing at what looked like a cargo manifest for a fast moving courier ship called the Pontiff.

Baz starts pointing out elements on his holoterminal and organizes them for presentation. “That’s the last piece of the puzzle sir.  I just need to confirm a last few bits of data. As you can see there are several luxury items on the manifest.  These certain items seem to be affectations of a certain high ranking Imperial political officer.  The ship is listed to travel from Corellia to a planet near the outer rim called Scree Fron.  Intelligence indicates that the Governor of Scree Fron has died from a freak hunting accident and I have also managed to determine that this planet seems to be used to move some supplies covertly to the outer rim.  It’s my suspicion that the planet is being used to supply fleet elements amassing in the outer rim.  This obviously makes Scree Fron somewhat important.”

“The officer that is being transported is being escorted by some hot shot squadron in Tie Advanced fighter craft and it all seems to be on the hush hush.  Lastly, the Imp officer in question is a logistics expert, is said to have contacts with the Hutts and has been complaining quite loudly about not having been promoted to a Governors position since he seems to be from some hoy palloy noble family on Corellia.  What does that say to you captain?”
Zeb’s Nexu smile came back.  “It looks to me like Scree Fron has a new Imperial Governor and we just happen to know his flight plan.  What can you tell me about fleet assets on the planet?”  In seconds Baz brought up the information, almost in anticipation of the question.  “Who was in whose head now Major?” thought Baz.
